Health Information Center Celebrates One-Year Anniversary

Houston (March 23, 2004) – Have you or a loved one ever been diagnosed with arthritis, diabetes, hypertension or another illness and been unfamiliar with what that diagnosis means? Have you wondered where to go for more information? Well, Kelsey-Seybold’s West Clinic Health Information Center, nestled inside Kelsey-Seybold’s West Clinic Campus located at 1111 Augusta, may be just the resource you need. It certainly was for Cathy Oliver.

When Oliver began to have a tingling sensation in her bones, she immediately thought the tingling was associated with arthritis, because the condition runs in her family. After noticing the Health Information Center when she accompanied her sister to a routine check-up at the Kelsey-Seybold West Clinic, Oliver decided to attend a class The Center was presenting on healthy bones. “I wanted to learn more about arthritis and how to take care of my bones. I wanted to learn how to reduce and prevent the pain that arthritis causes,” said Oliver. In addition, Oliver took home a number of printed materials for her mother, who also suffers from arthritis.

The mission of the Health Information Center, sponsored by the Kelsey Research Foundation, is to provide both patients and the general public with up-to-date, comprehensive information about the prevention, early detection and treatment of illness, enabling one to make informed decisions about his/her health. It is designed to be a convenient, comfortably quiet place, conducive to reading and research. Resources include printed educational materials on a variety of health topics, reference books, health videos and computer terminals connected to the Internet, which are programmed to assist in searching websites containing exactly the information for which the patient or family member seeks. The Center also offers free classes on how to talk to one’s doctor, medication safety and other health-related topics. All these services are provided free of charge at both the West Clinic Health Information Center and the original Health Information Center located at Kelsey-Seybold’s Main Campus at 2727 West Holcombe.

Tammie Anderson, LVN supervisor of both Health Information Centers, and Yolanda Stewart, LVN coordinator of the West Clinic Health Information Center are on-hand to assist with questions about how to find up-to-date information. “The Centers provide a wide range of resources including a variety of brochures and books in both English and Spanish on health topics relevant to adults and children,” Anderson said. “We see approximately 850 people each month at the West Clinic Health Information Center.”

The West Clinic Health Information Center will celebrate its one-year anniversary of providing excellent patient education to the local community on April 30, 2004 from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. During the celebration, the Center will provide free educational classes on the importance of maintaining a healthy heart and printed literature on a variety of topics. Refreshments and food will be served and there will be a raffle drawing for prizes.

The Health Information Center is a collaborative project of Kelsey-Seybold Clinic and the Kelsey Research Foundation. Both the Clinic and the Foundation share a strong commitment to health promotion and aim to be the premier source of health information for people seeking medical care in the Houston area.
