Research

Proactive, Systematic, and Targeted Screening for Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Fall 2016 - Spring 2017

  • Aimed at identifying patients at high risk for OSA, referring them for testing, and assessing changes in symptoms and quality of life.
  • We identified patients on the EMR with a score of at least 3 on the STOPBANG criteria who have not previously had sleep studies done and sent a questionnaire to follow up on the remaining STOPBANG criteria. Those who scored 4 or more were referred to our sleep clinic.

Falling Ahead: Improving Outpatient Fall Screening in the Elderly, Fall 2015 - Spring 2016

  • Worked with a group of residents during our ambulatory rotations to improve outpatient fall screening to > 50% in patients > 65 years old in general medicine clinics.
  • Implemented new visual cues such as checklists on computer screens, email reminders, and reminders on patient room doors. We also involved additional health care staff (nurses and MAs) to ensure fall screening was recorded.
  • Poster presentation at the UT Houston Internal Medicine Quality Fair in May 2016.
